Gjirokastra hotels
Gjirokastra is an important city of southern Albania, and has been
declared a “Museum City”. The town is built on the slope
of a mountain and is known for its characteristic and narrow stone
paved streets. The dwelling houses have the form of medieval towers
consisting of a building ensemble with characteristic architecture.
These started spreading downwards from the Castle in the 13th century.
The city was besieged and captured by the Ottomans in the 15th century,
but unlike many other towns in Albania it flourished under its new
rulers. In the 17th century it had 200 houses and was a very important
trading town.
The castle itself stands like a balcony over the city. It enables
the visitors to enjoy a very beautiful landscape. The National Museum
of Weapons is housed in the interior of the castle. Weapons produced
and used by Albanians since the ancient times are displayed there.
Gjirokastra has produced many important historic figures among which
the dictator Enver Hoxha and the several times Nobel Prize candidate
also winner of Man Booker International Prize 2005, the famous writer
Ismail Kadare.
You can see: The Castle of Gjirokastra, The Museum of Weapons (inside
the castle)
The Ethnographic Museum, The Church of Labova e Kryqit, in the village
with same name, the archaeological site of Antigonea, in the village
of Saraqinisht, the ruins of archaeological site of Adrianapol, in
the village of Sofratike. As Nicky Gardner in Hidden Europe Magazine
(March 2007) says: "A superbly well preserved Ottoman town. Arguably
more deserving of being included any shortlist of 'seven wonders of
Europe' than many more well-known tourist spot. A gem!"
