Durres hotels

The city of Durres was founded in 627 B.C. as a Greek colony named Epidamnus and was one of the causes of the Peloponnesian War in the 5th century BC. Later, as Dyrracium it became a very important staging post for the Roman Empire. During this time it also became a major trading centre and the main port on the eastern coast of the Adriatic.
In the middle ages it was coveted by many different intruders from all over Europe. The fact that this city has been inhabited throughout its history, means that very little of the ancient city has been excavated, as it exists under the newer buildings. However the archeological museum is well stocked and presented. The famous Roman orator, Cicero called Durres an admirable city, while the poet Catullus called it the tavern of the Adriatic
From the Venetian Tower that rises over the harbour, the road leads to the amphitheatre, which is the biggest of the Balkan Peninsula (capacity 15.000 spectators) dating back to the 2nd century A.D. and preserving an early Christian Crypt with a rare wall mosaic. Worth visiting are also the Archaeological Museum, the Cultural Centre with the "Aleksander Moisiu" Theatre, Museum of History, and the house of Aleksander Moisiu's Family. Today Durres is one of the biggest towns and the biggest sea port in Albania.
Durres hotels are not far from the Albanian International Airport and can be used as a base for short trips to Tirana, Kruja, Berat etc. as well as or for longer seaside holidays.
